The more pleats you have, the greater is the stacking space they require when opened. Curtains, many times, have no pleats and more times than not, remain closed. If they are opened, many drapes have no pinch pleats or very thin ones and take up very little space when open. Drapes require a lot more space when open because the fabric is much thicker, especially if lined. In a limited space, if drapes are to be used, they should be draped and tied back in a stationary position for maximum open exposure.
If you have determined that your drapes are safe to clean at home, carefully remove them from the rod making sure not to pull or tug at the drapes as this may damage the fabric. Pins and hooks should be removed from drapes before they are washed. Ideally, you want to hand wash your drapes to protect the fabric, but if the label indicates they are machine washable you should wash them on a gentle cycle with cold water. Similarly, it is preferable to hang your drapes to dry, but you may also put them in the dryer on low heat or as the label indicates.
Regularly cleaning the drapes in your home not only extends their life, but keeps your home free of unwanted dust, dirt, and pet hair. Drapes will accumulate a lot of grime over time, so cleaning them isnt just about appearances. Dirty drapes can contribute to allergens in your home, so maintaining them is also important for keeping your family healthy. Maintaining your drapes will make cleaning them much easier. Most vacuum cleaners come with a soft brush attachment which is specifically designed for cleaning drapes. Using this attachment, youll want to vacuum your drapes weekly, or at least every other week, to remove dust and dirt. Take special care to vacuum along the valance at the top of your drapes, as dust is especially likely to build up along this surface.
